Q) What is one piece of advice you’d give a woman wanting to get into your industry?
A) Be prepared to put in the hard work, listening and learning from everyone around you and making connections, while staying true to yourself. Every day is different and brings new opportunities, so embrace the fast pace of the industry. If you’re on the right path, you’ll keep Sunday Scaries at bay.
Q) What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far and how did you overcome this?
A) After University, all structure and clear next steps disappeared and I didn’t know how to make my way into the fashion industry. The result was that I did not follow a linear career path, switching from PR to interning at magazines to freelance fashion assisting, styling and writing, to working at Eliza.co.uk. This insecurity in the past has been tough at times, but I kept going, saying yes to as many opportunities as I could when I was freelance and building as a person at the same time.
Q) What is one thing that every woman should have in her wardrobe?
A) An oversized cotton white shirt you can wear over vest tops and bodysuits or under oversized blazers, trench coats and cropped jackets, with jeans, tailored trousers or midi skirts. There’s always a way to dress one up or down.
Q) What makes you feel confident?
A) I’m lucky to have amazing friends and family who’ll give me a boost when I need it most. And for extra confidence, it has to be clothes. Never hold back from wearing your favourite outfit. I decide on my outfit for the next day every night before I go to bed, to kickstart my day as confidently as possible.
Q) What is your favourite Ruey piece?
A) I’m obsessed with Ruey’s basic t-shirt. The fabric is so sculpting around the waist and doesn’t budge, so you’ll feel comfortable and supported all day long.
